The ask:
Researchers in UW’s Lee Lab of AI for bioMedical Sciences (AIMS), requested a cover illustration for their submission to the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, focused on machine learning used to predict hypoxemia for patients undergoing anesthesia.
My process:
I worked closely with the authors to understand their work, then created two conceptual drafts for them to guide development. I used an existing cover to mock up the basic elements to show a clearer picture of the final result. Starting with a stock image, I used Photoshop to modify it and then created vector transparencies to lay over the lower portion of the image.
Results:
The authors and publisher had some final art direction to ensure the art was exactly what was needed for publication once we knew the magazine would use our cover art.
